Pune: Karmyo to organise 'Cleanathon' on I-Day

PUNE: City-based volunteering network, Karmyo is set to organise a five kilometer long Cleanathon in the city on the occasion of India's 71st Independence Day.
Participants will walk a distance of 5km while also cleaning up any garbage on the way to spread a message of lets be the change we want to see. The participants will gather outside Shivajinagar railway station at 6:30 am on Wednesday and cross JM Road till Garware circle and back to the station via FC Road.
Founder of Karmyo, Anshumaan Bansal said, "This cleanathon shall also mark the beginning of a nation-wide movement called ‘India Starts With I’ which aims to encourage volunteerism among the youth. It aims to encourage us to stop complaining or criticizing but to take charge in our own hands; to take small steps towards the change that we want to see in our society."
According to Bansal, even after years of our Independence, many social issues still plague the nation - poverty, population, corruption, women safety, sanitation, depleting rivers, waste disposal, environmental degradation, tribal exploitation, child education, malnutrition, deplorable condition of farmers, racism and many others.
"Is the government solely responsible for tackling all these issues? Or are we somewhere to take the blame for our apathetic attitude? How can we continue to co-exist and turn a blind eye? It is time we wake up from our slumber. It is time we take destiny of our future generations in our hands," he stated.
